The High Bridge: Its History, Design and Construction: the presentation will tell the story of the engineering, political and social factors that led to the construction of the High Bridge, a1450 foot long stone bridge, completed in 1848. It carried the water of the Old Croton Aqueduct across the Harlem River into Manhattan and was the crowning achievement of this world famous civil engineering work. It was constructed under Chief Engineer John B. Jervis, one of America's outstanding early civil engineers.<br />
<br />
Robert Kornfeld Jr., RA is a Senior Associate at Thornton Tomasetti. He is Vice President of the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct and is an expert on the history of the Croton system.<br />

A great value PDH program is scheduled for June 4, 2008. Information about the program is below, and a PDF flyer is attached. This program is not sponsored by the Society, but I think the oportunity to gain valuable PDH hours locally and a low cost is important for our members.<br />

"The Westchester County Soil and Water Conservation District and Department of Planning are presenting a one-day "technical" workshop on ways to manage stormwater runoff to both protect and improve water quality and lessen the degree of flooding by controlling excessive runoff (please see the attached flyer). "Thinking Beyond The STORM: A Workshop On The Storage And Treatment Of Runoff In Municipalities" will be held June 4, 2008 at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. This workshop will benefit government- and private-sector planners, engineers, landscape architects, environmental scientists, and other professional staff. The workshop has been recently approved for 6.75 professional development hours (PDH) for NYS licensed professional engineers and landscape architects."<br />

The EXPO is an event to promote engineering. Close to one hundred colleges / firms / and engineering related organizations are registered to exhibit. Last years event drew over 1,000 students.<br />
This is a good opportunity to introduce engineering to high school students and encourage engineering as a profession.<br />

It is time, once again, to recognize the achievements and/or services of professional engineers for their service to our profession and to the public. This is an important activity worthy of your careful consideration and attention, particularly when we are striving to improve the image of engineers. Public recognition of the accomplishments of our members and people that support the profession is a very important component of our program. Please give this some thought.</p>
